Every couple would wish to have a child. But, when they face multiple failures to conceive, they will be ready to do anything to have a baby. With the advancement in technology, several assisted reproductive techniques have developed to help couples have a child. Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is one of the popular assisted reproductive techniques (ART) used to handle male fertility with more chances of conception. The success rate is also high when compared to other ART techniques.
The ICSI process involves sending sperm directly into the matured egg to promote fertilization. Once fertilization takes place, the matured egg is inserted into the woman’s uterus. About 25% of women conceive after the very first attempt of the ICSI procedure.

ICSI treatment is suitable in the following conditions:
- Failed IVF cycles previously
- The reason for infertility remains unidentified
- Male infertility

How is ICSI Procedure Performed?
The ICSI procedure is similar to the IVF process, except for the fertilization process. The eggs and sperms will be collected from the female and male partners for fertilization. The male partner has to ejaculate either in a cup or a surgical procedure is used to retrieve the sperm. The female partner will be given medications to stimulate the production of eggs. Then, the matured eggs will be collected using a small needle and an ultrasound probe. Anesthesia will be given so that you don’t have pain during retrieval. Using the device connected to the needle, the matured eggs are collected for further use.
During the ICSI procedure, the washed sperm is directly inserted into the egg using a needle. Once injected, it may take up to 24 hours for fertilization to take place and to form an embryo. Once the embryo is formed, it will be kept in the lab for 6 days and is monitored to know its growth and development. All the fertilized embryos will not be moved to the uterus, but only healthy embryos will be inserted. Two or three healthy embryos will be selected after monitoring their growth and will be moved to the woman’s uterus.
What Happens After ICSI Procedure?
After 15 days of embryo transfer, you can take a pregnancy test called “beta test”. The beta test measures the amount of beta protein on the hCG hormone. The hCG hormone is produced during pregnancy by your body. To confirm your pregnancy, the doctor performs an ultrasound.
How Much Does ICSI Cost?
The cost of ICSI procedure is less costly in India when compared to other countries. Many couples travel to India to undergo ICSI due to affordable costs and high standards of care. The cost of ICSI is Rs. 1,50,000/- only. However, the cost varies based on various factors. The cost varies based on:
- The clinic you choose
- The method used for processing eggs and sperms
- The doctor’s experience
- The infertility issue you have
- The cost of medications required
In some hospitals, the cost of medications used and the processing fee may not be included in the package. You should confirm with the hospital during the selection of the package itself.

The success rate of the ICSI process is about 70% to 80%. However, the success rate varies from one person to another based on various factors such as the patient’s age, doctor’s expertise, etc.
